The resilience of innovation: Analysis of the World Intellectual Property Indicators Report 2023

Last November, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released its annual report for the year 2023, reflecting a positive outlook for global innovation and creativity, even when facing economic challenges.

Record number of patents: 3.55 million applications in 2023, the fourth consecutive year of growth. Asia leads the momentum, with IP Offices in the region accounting for 70% of the total.

Sustainable technologies on the rise: Patent applications in renewable energy, such as solar and wind, reached nearly 45,000 in 2022, demonstrating the role of IP in addressing climate challenges.

Globalization of innovation: Emerging economies such as India saw a significant 15.7% increase in patent applications, consolidating their role in the global ecosystem.

In contrast, trademark applications fell slightly, possibly signaling a leveling off after years of strong growth.

As can be seen, this report reaffirms the importance of protecting and promoting innovation as a driver of economic and social development.
